Although mental illness can affect any one of us at any time, there are unique difficulties faced by expatriates partly due to being distant from the support networks and familiarity of our home countries. I am passionate about reducing the stigma of mental illness and improving the lives and wellbeing of people living with mental illness. I offer integrative therapy which utilises knowledge and skills from several counselling styles including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and person centred therapy. This approach enables me to adapt the counselling style to suit the individual needs of the client. Counselling is non-directive and non-judgemental in manner and aims to help the client to understand why they feel the way they do and to be supported in finding a way forward. Living with mental illness is difficult for the individual but also affects partners, family and friends. Counselling and education about mental illness can help carers to cope with their own feelings and to learn how they can offer care and support to their loved one. TchHi I'm Carmen, parenting educator for Counselling Dubai. I am a mother to a four year old son and a teacher with 20 years experience in Education. I have recently taught at a large international school in Dubai and have been living here for four years. I present workshops for teachers, teaching assistants, parents and nannies. I also see parents for one on one parenting education.![]() I am originally from New Zealand where I trained as a teacher. I have an elementary teaching diploma from Christchurch Teacher's College in NZ and a Masters degree majoring in International School Education from Oxford Brookes University in UK. During my 20 year career as an educator I have taught in 7 schools around the world, including 4 international schools. I have taught children aged 3 to 12 years old but my area of specialty is Early Childhood. I believe that childhood is a precious time. I see all too often children who are being encouraged to grow up too fast and parents who are struggling to keep up with the demands of raising a child in the 21st century. Many of our children here in Dubai are also growing up as expatriates and they have different needs to children growing up in their home country. The workshops I offer help parents address these important issues. I also believe there is a need for parents to learn how to support their child's education and understand more about working in partnership with their child's school. I am committed to helping schools, teachers and parents learn more about themselves as educators. The key question I ask at my parent education workshops is: I provide training, workshops, seminars, courses, classes, tutorials, coaching and support programs for parenting education to enable confident, happier, emotionally stable parents, and happier, calmer, well adjusted children. I am passionate about providing consistent parenting education in today's climate of change, where parents often struggle with the media bombardment of fear around raising secure, contented children.
