What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and What is it for?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psychological therapy that helps you to change how you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour) to help you to feel better. It focuses on the problems that you are experiencing now rather than focusing on your past issues.

CBT can help with many different problems and it has a strong research evidence base for its effectiveness across a wide range of illnesses and conditions. CBT is one of the most effective treatments available for depression and anxiety and is as effective as antidepressant medication for many people.

  • How does Cognitive Behavioural Therapy work?

    CBT helps you to make sense of problems by breaking them down into smaller parts and looking at how they are connected and the impact that they have on you. These parts are the situation, the thoughts, the emotional and the physical feelings and the behaviour or action. CBT shows how these 5 parts are connected and how the same situation can have very different outcomes depending on the thoughts, feelings and behaviours in between.

    A useful way to think about is like a vicious circle and that CBT can help you to break that vicious cycle of negative thinking, distressing feelings and unhelpful behaviours.

    Situation > Thoughts > Emotional Feelings > Physical Feelings > Behaviours

    What can I expect from CBT sessions?

    CBT can be done individually with a consultant or as part of a group, it can also be done from a self help book or online. The most effective method for CBT is individual sessions with aa trained consultant.

    You can expect to have between 5 and 20 sessions over 6 weeks to 6 months depending on your need. The trainer will assess your suitability for CBT as it may not be the best option for everybody and it's important that your needs are met.

    The consultant will ask you some questions about your background as although CBT focuses on current problems, it is useful to understand how things from the past may affect you now. You will set some goals for the short, medium and long term and make an agenda at the beginning of each session. Towards the end of each session agreed tasks will be set for you so that you can practise things that you learnt between the sessions.

    The consultant will help you to identify, understand and change the unrealistic and unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you are having and also help you to prepare and prevent for relapses.

    Cognitive Behavioural Coaching can help you to control the distress and difficult symptoms that you are experiencing. It does not have any unpleasant side effects and could help you have more enjoyment in your life and feel better able to work and socialise effectively.
