Depression

It is not unusual to have times when we feel sad or blue. This happens to all of us when we are upset about things that happen in our lives. When these feelings don't leave us and we find it difficult to lead our lives as we did before or if we have these feelings for no obvious reason then talking with a counsellor can be helpful.

Depression results from a complex variety of factors including biological vulnerability, early life history, relationship problems and life difficulties.

Depression is common and it is thought that one in five people will have an episode of clinical depression at sometime in their lives.


What is Depression?

Depression varies symptomatically, psychologically and biologically but its core features are well recognised and include some of those listed below;

  • Disturbed sleep,
  • loss of appetite and weight loss,
  • fatigue,
  • low mood and sadness,
  • unable to find pleasure or enjoyment from things,
  • feelings of emptiness,
  • anger or resentment,
  • anxiety,
  • guilt,
  • shame,
  • loss of energy and interest,
  • things seem pointless or hopeless,
  • negative ideas about self, the world and the future,
  • social withdrawal and relationship problems.


  • What can you do to treat Depression and how can Counselling help?

    Depression varies in severity and the treatment choice will depend on how severe it is.

    Antidepressant medication can be of great benefit to people with severe depression and this can be discussed with your counsellor who can recommend a specialist Doctor to prescribe the most suitable medication.

    Counselling can help people with depression to understand the reasons behind their feelings and to learn new coping skills and to explore any social problems that the individual may be having.

    The counselling style will vary in order to best suit the client. The counsellor will help the client to focus on current difficulties and in learning new ways of coping. Negative feelings about the self will also be addressed and support will be given to help prevent relapses.

    In depression, people can lose the ability for a warm, caring and supportive inner approach to themselves. Counselling helps to assist the person to develop a compassionate, forgiving approach which is helpful and healing.
