Anxiety Attacks
By Laura Frisbie
Anxiety Attack Symptoms are simply sensations that you CAN prevent and control
Anxiety attack symptoms are sensations in your body
that seem out of control.
Out of nowhere, you are overcome with fear.
You have trouble breathing and your heart pounds. You are dizzy and sick to your stomach. You wonder if you are dying or going crazy. You might even go to the emergency room for a heart attack, never realizing that you are having anxiety attack symptoms.
Also called Panic Attack, symptoms include:
Surge of overwhelming panic
Hyperventilation
Feeling of losing control or going crazy
Hot flashes or chills
Heart palpitations or chest pain
Trembling or shaking
Feeling like youre going to pass out
Nausea or stomach cramps
Trouble breathing or choking sensation
Feeling detached or unreal
This terrifying experience naturally leads to worry about having another one. Some people start to avoid situations that might trigger another attack, or where they won't be able to "escape". You can become afraid of more and more life situations and eventually feel safe only at home. Did you know that panic attack symptoms can occur while you are sleep?
Anxiety attack symptoms take a huge toll on your life and can lead to depression. A disorder can develop (essentially, a fear of fear runs (ruins) your life), and you become chronically tense and anxious.
Anxiety attacks are often connected with major life transitions: graduating from college and entering the workplace, getting married, and having a baby. Severe stress, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or job loss can also trigger a panic attack.
The most effective form of treatment is therapy that helps you look at your fears in a more realistic light and helps your experience of panic become less terrifying. The best thing you can do for yourself is to face the underlying causes of anxiety and to practice controlling your emotions.
Medication for anxiety is not a good option. Two common medications are:
Antidepressants: It takes several weeks before they begin to work, so you have to take them continuously not just during an attack.
Benzodiazepines: Anti-anxiety drugs that act within 30 to 60 minutes. They are highly addictive and have serious withdrawal symptoms.
Plus, medication alone doesn't work. It must be combined with therapy and lifestyle changes that address the underlying causes. So, even if you take medication, you still need to do the therapy. Taking medication shifts the focus of treatment to dealing with its side-effects, instead of the underlying causes of anxiety.

2. Describe what happens as clearly as possible. Describe physical symptoms as well as thoughts or behaviors. This can bring a sense of control and help you see ways to manage the problem.
3. Don't Stimulate. Smoking and caffeine can provoke anxiety attacks. Also be careful with medications that contain stimulants, such as diet pills and non-drowsy cold medications.
4. Read up on anxiety attack symptoms and panic attacks. When you see that you are normal and aren't going crazy, it can help you relax.
5. Learn to control your breathing. When you control your breathing, you can calm yourself down when you feel anxious. You are less likely to create the very sensations that you are afraid of.
6. Strengthen your relaxation response. When practiced regularly, yoga, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation strengthen your bodys relaxation response the opposite of the stress response of anxiety and panic. Make time for them daily.
Remember! The BEST treatment for anxiety attack symptoms is holistic prevention.
